Thesis 2 Module 12
Steps for this Module
In this module, you will continue to refine the second deliverable you designated to work on this semester. If you conducted user testing before this module, integrate the results into your refinements. This is the last module in which you can conduct user testing, so if you have not yet started, you should plan to conduct your sessions during this module. You are required to post the results of your user testing by the end of Module 12, and this is a thesis milestone.
REFLECTION: Deliverable 1:
For my User Testing, I printed out two copies of my book. Because my Thesis focuses on children between the ages of 5-7 years old, it was a bit more difficult for me to find candidates. Fortunately for me, a former co-worker who now works at the elementary school in my district was able to hand out my testing materials to a student and take several photos since I was not allowed into the school due to COVID-19. For my second user candidate, a friend who lives out of state offered to have his daughter test out my book after receiving it in my mail from me.
USER 1: Based on the questions I had this student answer, it seems that some of the vocabulary was hard to understand. When asked if there was anything he found confusing, he responded that “ page 5, my transportation” was difficult to comprehend. In addition to this, he also stated that there could have been more room for him to write his responses and that he did not care for “page 7”, which was an activity where he was required to draw. On a positive note, my user did make a new friend while completing this deliverable and seemed to really enjoy the interview pages.
USER 2: Based on the feedback that I received on this user, she did not 100% fit the criteria since she had not recently moved. Because of this, she was unable to answer the section on making new friends because this had already been established. When asked if there was anything that could be improved, she said that more lines should be added for scribing. Also, unlike User 1, this user wrote with a pen instead of the provided marker set and found that this writing utensil did not pair well with the glossy finish on the pages. On a positive note, User 2 stated that she did enjoy filling out this book because “it was fun and creative”.
Deliverable 2:
For my User Testing, I used the program Invision to simulate what my app would look like if it were live on an actual cell phone. Using this program, I sent it to a friend who had her 7-year-old daughter scroll through the screens. With that being said, there was no content on any of these secondary screens because they had not been designed yet.
MY FINDINGS
USER 3: This User is 7, but actually tests at a 12-year-old level and is very intelligent. Because of this User’s more advanced development, she found this to be boring and not anything she was really interested in. Also, she did not fit the criteria of having recently moved, so she was unable to relate to what she was looking at. On a positive note, when asked if everything was easily legible and simple to use she stated “Yes, it was”.
I feel that my design for the book worked for my audience because I received positive feedback from my users. The size and font choice seemed to be legible enough for them to read and answer the questions. One thing I need to add is more lines for writing on, which was something that both users said my book needed more of. The goal of both testing sessions was to find out how this specific age group responded to the concept and goal of my deliverable, and that they liked the overall design. The research method I used was qualitative because I relied on user feedback and answers to specific questions I had asked them each. All research conducted was done on the location of the users’ school or personal home and then emailed to me.
