Thesis 2 Module 8
Steps for this Module
In this module, you should be moving onto making the second deliverable as stated on your contract for this semester. The lecture is about designing for multiple materials while maintaining a cohesive visual system. You should also make any necessary adjustments to the first deliverable to make it ready for the user testing session. Once you are ready, you can commence user testing, which is due by Module 12.
REFLECTION: What final adjustments are you making to the materials you have created already and why?
For my “final” adjustments for my book design, I changed the font of all of my headers back to Arial Rounded, which is what I had in one of my previous versions. The reason for this was because I felt that the rounded nature of the characters mimicked that of my logo. In addition to this, I also decreased the size of the hierarchy.
How is your user testing progress so far?
I am having a really hard time figuring out how I am going to do my user testing since it revolves around children from the ages of 5-7 that have just recently moved to a new location. I do not have any idea as to how I am going to find this very specific demographic other than stalking kids in the airport (haha). What I have decided to do is use my cousins and children’s friends to fill out the book that way I can at least see if my margins are large enough and the lines for the text are long enough.
Does the idea of affordances resonate with you? How might you apply it to your materials?
Yes, I think designing with affordances in mind is very important, especially because I am targeting small children. For my book design, if I choose to have some sort of packaging, it will be critical to ensure that the child is able to easily open it without having the help of an adult and that it can be held and is mobile.
How are the materials you are using impacting how you are designing (or not)?
Currently, the only material I am working with are printed sheets of paper and a stapler, so I am not really being all that impacted as of the present.
What are the most useful and interesting things you have learned in this module?
It was interesting for me to learn about affordances in this module because up until now, I had never known what it meant in terms of design.
